Codex Cosplay at Dragon*ConI was invited to Dragon*Con 2010 by the fine folks in charge of the MMO Track. After a long flight where I slept a lot because I forgot to download a new book onto my Kindle, I arrived Thursday night, took a cab to my hotel, checked in and then sped over to the Sheraton where the con was being held to pick up my badge.

I went to the VIP badge pickup but they didn’t have my badge. After an hour of running around trying to find the right people, Kevin from the MMO Track came to the rescue and printed out my badge for me. I then went to a sweet steakhouse with him and the rest of the MMO team. I really enjoyed the meal, but everyone else got food poisoning. Maybe all that scotch has made my stomach as tough as nails. We’ll go with that.

Friday morning I got up bright and early and snagged a cab to the Con. They had a “snark-cast” session which I participated in and answered questions from fans. Afterward, I had the rest of the day free to explore the Con and take lots of pictures, which you can see over at my Dragon*Con gallery at oxhorn.com.

ROFLMAO! at Dragon*ConSaturday I got to sleep in (which was great since I was up until 3 am the previous night). I woke in time to watch the yearly parade which shuts down the streets of Downtown Atlanta for an hour or so. Thousands of people packed the streets to watch — it was the most people I have ever seen in one place in all my life. I recorded a bit of the parade before my camera died which you can also watch in my gallery. I enjoyed the parade for a while and then ducked into an Irish pub for some shepard’s pie and Guinness. Then I dinked around the Con a bit until 5:30, when the World of Warcraft “Meet and Greet” started. Hundreds of people filled the Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton. They played ROFLMAO! on the big screen and then invited me up on stage, where I got to help MC the event. Now, they never told me what to expect and I had NO idea I was going to help MC, so I had to sort of wing it. It ended up being a blast though, and we had a gnome-punting competition and a few dance competitions. I held a Q&A with fans and made sure to pick on the Alliance as much as I could.

Afterward I posed for pictures with fans and had an impromptu smoke ring competition in the parking lot (which I soundly won, of course!). I had to duck out a few days early due to work obligations, but it was a great time and I’m looking forward to next year a lot.

Had lots of fun at D*C, but i do believe you were mistaken about something.. The WIND won that impromptu smoke ring competition. Regardless! Can’t wait until next year!

Brandon, we LOVED having you as an impromptu guest at Dragon*Con. We would love to have you back next year (and the year after that…)

Don’t feel too bad about not being prepared for the WoW Meet and Greet. You did a fantastic job, and if I had a dollar for every fan who approached me and thanked me for having you at Dragon*Con, I’d be able to quit my day job. The only complaint my staff had about working with you is that we didn’t get enough time with you after Saturday! You’re going to have to come back and remedy that next year.

Oh, and practice those smoke rings… You may have defeated all of those Johnny-come-lately’s out there, but you haven’t defeated me! I hereby challenge you to a “smoke ring-off” at Dragon*Con next year! *gauntlet thrown*

All the best to you and yours, and I look forward to seeing you at Dragon*Con again next year!

-Grim (and the rest of the MMO Team at Dragon*Con)
